The annual St. Patrick's Day celebration around the University of Massachusetts in Amherst known as "Blarney Blowout" spun out of control yesterday as police officers in riot gear arrested more than 70 people while dispersing massive crowds. Police from the city, university and state troopers in full riot gear converged on the crowds around noon. The annual event takes place just before St Patrick's day on the first Saturday of Spring Break.
Forty-four people were arrested by Saturday afternoon and four officers suffered minor injuries after police spent the day attempting to disperse "several" crowds of more than 1,500 students. Police from the city, university and state troopers in riot gear converged on the crowds around noon.
News report's show that police began to move on the crowd firing paintball-style guns loaded with pepper spray after students began setting off fireworks and throwing beer cans and bottles.
