It's a good thing the Sox were on the road today. It was a cruel morning in Ct today. This was from my windshield at 9:30am. And it's not April Fools Day.

A haircut is something that I need every couple of months. I was now a month and a half overdue and beginning to look like something from the Chia pet collection. I have been traveling to different barbers and stylist for over a couple years since my barber of over 30 years has retired. There was never a feeling of uneasiness when I went to visit him, because my haircut was the same every time.
I was prepared to go to a chain salon this weekend for yet another experience into the unknown world of getting a haircut. Who would be there to deliver yet another version of my new style? That’s not to say they have all been bad. But there have been a few that caused me to wear my baseball hat a little longer than normal. The last one definitely fell in that category. After going to the same barber for as long as I had, nowadays, each new adventure to the salon means a little apprehension. Will I be lucky enough to get by another experience without being butchered? As I was driving to a chain store of hair salon's today, I noticed a neon sign lit up with the word "open". It was a small hair salon that I had never seen before. . What also caught my eye was another sign out front that said men’s haircut $10. I had never noticed this place before. I thought, if I’m going into the world of the unknown today, the price is right so it’s time to roll the dice. I turned around and drove back into the parking lot. When I walked into the front door, there was one older guy in the chair and a young lady at the controls, working a pair of scissors. She was just finishing up his high and tight haircut. She cheerfully asked, what can I do for you today? I replied that I did not have a reservation, but could she take a walk in? She replied politely. “No problem, I am just about finished and will be with you shortly.” I sat down and briefly browsed through the reading material. There was a couple of gossip magazines, but no Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrated or guy stuff that I would enjoyed to read in the old days as I sat to wait my turn at Angelo's Barbershop. I know this probably sounds bad, but I was relieved to see a young lady for a change. I have had many people cut my hair during the last couple of years while I have become a nomad, without the same stylist or barber as I have traveled to different salons. I have not had an attractive young woman cut my hair during these many trips. I’ve also learned through this experience that you need to be very specific when indicating what type of haircut you want or you’ll be wearing your baseball hat for weeks. “So, what would you like done today?” she asked. Short on the side, a little longer on the top to cover up a bit of the new thinning effect that is part of age and squared in the back,” I replied. She smiled and grabbed the electric razor. She then hooked up a number two on the razor, hit the switch and it started to hum as the hair from the side of my head began to fall. It didn’t take long for the small talk to begin. “How long have you worked here, how long has the salon been here, are you busy?” I asked. “I work three days a week, the shop has been open a year and doing well” she replied. In a short time the electric razor was turned off, the scissors were clipping as she was finishing up. She picked up the razor again and asked, “How short would you like the sideburns?” “Just a little higher than they are now please,” and with that she was finished. Despite all my anxiety, Jessica had delivered a good haircut. As I got up and turned to walk over to the cash register. Jessica was promptly there and said “That will be $10,” I paid her the ten and another $5 for a tip. Did I look great? Well there is not enough time in the day to get me looking that good but I got through another experience without being butchered and gotten more than my money’s worth. As I walked out the door, I felt a little spring in my step. I believe I found a new place to go, because I don't like being a Nomad or having all that anxiety when it's time to get another haircut.
