Competition at the Sochi Olympics has already begun, 32 hours before the opening ceremony. The early starts were needed this year because of the number of events that are scheduled. The 2014 Winter Olympics will feature a record 12 new events, making them the biggest Winter Games ever.
The U.S. Olympic program earned a record 37 medals (nine gold) during the winter Olympics of 2010. The U.S. could win 40-50 medals in Sochi according to a talk radio show that I was listening to and more than 15 gold medals seems plausible. For me, the appeal of the Winter Olympics are those high-wattage sports such as Hockey, Skeleton, Luge, Ski Jumping, Downhill, Snowboard, Alpine and yes even Figure Skating events.
I will be camped out in front of the television Friday night to see the opening ceremonies with the huge artistic show that the host nation puts on to celebrate the country’s history and heritage. The XXII Olympic opening ceremony in Sochi starts Friday morning at 11 a.m. and will be shown on NBC Friday night.
