I’m sure that everyone who has ever gone fishing has a story to tell. The one that got away, the one that is mounted on the wall or the one that was not a fish but a descendant of the Loch Ness Monster.  I also have a few stories, but there is a good one that happened while ice fishing that I want to share.

A few years ago there was a group of us that went ice fishing in Holland Ma. We had been on the ice all morning and there wasn’t a flag that had popped up during that entire time. We had a nice fire burning and were in the process of having a little lunch when one of the guys shouted out, “Tip up”

I looked over and of course it was one of mine. It was the farthest flag from where we were standing.  I had just put a super topping of chili and the fixins on that first hot dog that I about to enjoy for lunch.

I then looked back at my two hands which were holding this huge masterpiece that had just been created.  Yes that monster of gooey goodness started yelling my name and at that minute in time, it was the only thing that mattered.

My friend Bob Ingersal was standing there with me and I told him, you can have it.  As Bob  started to hustle out across the ice to hopefully find a fish on the line I proceeded to devour my masterpiece. When I was done with the chili dog I walked out to the spot where Bob was now bent over and trying to bring the fish in.

That fish zigzagged back and forth taking line back out each time it made another run. Bob played that line with the fish on it perfectly and after what seemed like an eternity, brought it through the hole and onto the ice.  The yelling and shouting from the group started immediately. It was the biggest largemouth bass that Bob had ever caught and was also bigger than any largemouth I had ever caught.

After a couple of pictures , Bob released the fish back into the lake and we headed back to the fire and some more great chili dogs.
