Drive-in movie theaters may have been a fad in the 50s and 60s, but today, there are far and few of them left. In 1958, there were more than 4,000 drive-in theaters were spread across America. Last year there were about 350 left in the country.
The place where you could watch movies from your car or under the stars was once a staple of the culture. You bring your own food, talk as much as you want, and pay less than you do at a regular movie theater—without ever having to get out of your car.
They also offered concession stands with all your mouth water with all your favorites like fresh popped popcorn, grilled hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs, 12" made-to-order pizza, nachos, ice cream novelties and much more.
This year, Drive-ins are in trouble. Those dwindling numbers are now facing a new crisis- digital projection. The major studios have discontinued the distribution of film movies and now all new movies will be distributed in digital format. The Drive-ins have to decide whether to upgrade to digital projectors or go out of business. Some Drive-ins have already announced they are closing because of the large new expense.
Soon there will be the warm spring and summer nights, there will be the regular customers, the families with their blankets and chairs. And a few less Drive-Ins to experience this classic part of Americana.
