West Indian Festival Saturday Hartford Ct This year the Greater Hartford West Indian Independence Celebrations is marking its 55th anniversary and expecting a crowd of over 20,000 spectators to celebrate this annual tradition. The parade will take place on Saturday, August 12th with the route beginning at Main and Battles Streets, filtering on to Asylum Street then finally gathering inside Bushnell Park. The event will end with a free concert in the park featuring a host of locally based talent as well as international artistes. The celebration will also feature marching bands, floats from various radio stations such as HOT 93.7, drill teams, masqueraders displaying vibrantly colored costumes, and dance troupes. Not to be missed is the array of vendors who will display their various wares and prepare delicious traditional cuisines from the Caribbean and beyond. The Perseid Meteors Everywhere in the Sky No matter where you live, the 2017 Perseid meteor shower will probably produce the greatest number of meteors on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. In a dark, moonless sky, this shower often produces 50 or more meteors per hour. But, in 2017, we’ll have to contend with the light of a bright waning gibbous moon, which rises at mid-evening and washes the sky during the peak hours of the shower, between midnight and dawn. A good number of Perseid meteors will be bright, so you should be able to see some Perseids, despite the moonlit glare. And, although the Perseid numbers are few and far between in the evening hours, you’ll have some moon-free viewing time between nightfall and moonrise. A new study about depression is coming out of Bristol University in England. This study compares depression levels between vegans/vegetarians and their meat-eating counterparts. Nearly 10,000 British men were included in this test. Most ate a balanced diet include meat intake, while only 350 of the participants were committed vegetarians or vegans.
