By presenting the festival in the heart of downtown, the organization seeks to bolster a positive image of Springfield, engage artists and a diverse community in fueling its revitalization, and emphasize its place as a cultural hub and driver of cultural excellence in the region.

This year the Greater Hartford West Indian Independence Celebrations is marking its 55th anniversary and expecting a crowd of over 20,000 spectators to celebrate this annual tradition. The parade will take place on Saturday, August 12th with the route beginning at Main and Battles Streets, filtering on to Asylum Street then finally gathering inside Bushnell Park.  The event will end with a free concert in the park featuring a host of locally based talent as well as international artistes.  The celebration will also feature marching bands, floats from various radio stations such as HOT 93.7, drill teams, masqueraders displaying vibrantly colored costumes, and dance troupes. Not to be missed is the array of vendors who will display their various wares and prepare delicious traditional cuisines from the Caribbean and beyond.

The Perseid Meteors                                                                                        Everywhere in the Sky
No matter where you live, the 2017 Perseid meteor shower will probably produce the greatest number of meteors on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. In a dark, moonless sky, this shower often produces 50 or more meteors per hour. But, in 2017, we’ll have to contend with the light of a bright waning gibbous moon, which rises at mid-evening and washes the sky during the peak hours of the shower, between midnight and dawn. A good number of Perseid meteors will be bright, so you should be able to see some Perseids, despite the moonlit glare. And, although the Perseid numbers are few and far between in the evening hours, you’ll have some moon-free viewing time between nightfall and moonrise.
