I’m back from the annual November adventures at deer camp in the Northeast Kingdom. This year was no different in that Mother Nature again gave us a healthy dose of snow and some bitter cold temperatures that were in the minus zero range a few mornings when I got up. The deer won again this year and no bucks were seen, just fresh tracks in the snow as they were nocturnal. The short of the story is, so far venison will not be part of any of my upcoming menu items and the jerky recipes have not been used so far.
I was able to get back a day early from Vermont this year. Yesterday, the opportunity to take Josie May back into the field and continue this year’s training on pointing and retrieving pheasants was a welcome relief. There is something very special in watching the enthusiasm in which the young dog loves to get out there and find all the different types of game birds. This has been a very good first season spent hunting with her. Now, as the days go by a lot more quickly this time of the year, the hunting season will inevitably come to an end. More good weather and more time is all that I can hope for.
