Fifty years ago, today on April 30, 1975, the last few Americans, still remaining in South Vietnam were airlifted out of the country as Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces.
Thousands of Vietnamese supporters of the US were also hastily airlifted from the country that day. The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular foreign war in US history with over 58,000 American lives were lost. As many as two million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were also killed.
