Fifty years ago, today on April 30, 1975, the last few Americans, still remaining in South Vietnam were airlifted out of the country as Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces.

Thousands of Vietnamese supporters of the US were also hastily airlifted from the country that day. The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular foreign war in US history with over 58,000 American lives were lost. As many as two million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were also killed. Spring is finally here, and many gardening enthusiasts now eagerly awaiting the opening of their local garden centers. The opening dates of garden centers vary depending on the location, climate, and other factors depending on where you live. In my area, Garden centers are opening and have started by getting their cold tolerant vegetable and flowering plants out first with the stuff that is frost tolerant and easy to protect.

Its now time to preparing the garden for the growing season and it involves several steps. Make a plan for what you want to grow, where you will plant, and when you will start. Consider the sun exposure, soil type, and growth habit. Tall plants will need to be on the north side of your shorter plants if the shorter plants need good sun exposure.

The next step, if you have a large area, its time to get out the rototiller and add some good organic fertilizer or compost in the ground. You also want to do the same thing to your raised beds, and even planters. Compost is the magic elixir for any garden! Mixing compost into your soil enriches it with nutrients, improving plant growth. A healthy soil is the foundation of any thriving garden. I have learned the hard way that lack of fertilizer or planting the same crops in the same spot can lead to soil fatigue and disease. Rotating crops each season will also prevent these issues.

Planting at the right time is another important factor for an abundant and flourishing garden. Is the soil warm enough? Are the nights going to be frost-free? Is the forecast is predicting a cold snap, Throw on those row covers. They’re easy to use and can prevent frost damage. By keeping a close eye on the weather, you’ll be ready to act quickly. Just be ready to do a lot of babysitting during the first few weeks after planting.

Over watering is another common mistake that can lead a big problem which is root rot. Young plants need water, but not too much!

Allow adequate spacing between plants which allows air to circulate. It is key in reducing the risk of fungal infections like powdery mildew.

Certain plant combinations also enhance growth and deter pests. Planting flowers around your vegetables attracts the pollinators like bees and butterflies and they are your garden’s best allies, ensuring better pollination and a bountiful harvest. There are many flowers like marigolds that are also good plant combinations that deter pests.

Also understand what vegetable plants benefit each other and those that don’t pair up well, you will create a healthier garden where plants work together.

Finaly, after the prep and planting is done, another very good way to help your garden is to add a fresh layer of mulch around the garden plants and beds. This helps the soil retain moisture and keeps the weeds down. After that, all that’s left is a little feeding, weeding, and watering – and plenty of time to be ready to harvest by this summer!

Dear Germany
It's sad to see that your progressive country of ordinary law-abiding people can no longer walk around your city's squares or festivals anymore and feel safe. Your elections, that were held back in February, was the best opportunity you had to resolve those issues. But sadly, you didn’t and nothing has changed.

Germans have been raised with the guilt of your past and now live with those unintended consequences. The ingrained fear of never again, rounding up and deporting anyone has been taught in the schools for generations since WWII. It doesn't matter if those people are religious extremist, who are culturally incompatible with Western lifestyles and won't assimilate in a civilized society.

By not addressing those Left wing, Pro migration, open borders policies that the Germans have lived with for over the last 20 years, they have now had to endure a decade of nonstop crimes and 19 deadly, or attempted attacks involving Islamic immigrants in just over the past year alone. What have these years of increasing terrorism taught the German’s? Apparently, nothing.

Thank God the tide has turned in the US and criminals and extremist are getting free deportation trips on a daily basis. The majority of Americans don’t live with that guilt, only the reality of what can happen with open borders and an unchecked flow of immigrants.

Wet, Mild Weather and 50-Degree Nights

As we continue to enjoy the warmer temperatures of Spring, very shortly there will be another hike through the woods that I look forward to as a forager and that is the opportunity to harvest some of the tastiest delicacies in the woods, like the Morel mushroom.

These are not your average mushroom. Morels are one of the most sought-after varieties of wild mushrooms. Why are morels so beloved? Put simply, they’re delicious. Morels have a meaty, yet tender texture and an earthy, nutty flavor that mushroom enthusiasts can’t get enough of. Morels have a very short growing season and are available in New England depending on the weather from late April through the first week or so of June.

To narrow down the specific time period for hunting the elusive Morels, there are a few specific environmental conditions that you must wait for. They are soil temperature, air temperature, and the humidity. During the initial warm days of spring when daytime highs start reaches the 60s and the nights are no colder than 45 degrees. All mushrooms need moisture, and the rain is the trigger that will start the season. If these conditions are happening and we get the first rain of spring, the best analogy I can give you is it's like the phone call you get from a friend when he says, “skip out on work today because the fish are biting”. Like all foraging seasons. The morel season is short and will end a lot more quickly than we would like.

If your now ready to get out there, the best areas to start foraging are in areas that are mostly exposed to southern sun, but with underbrush for shade. The area should also have a moist soil. The terrain can be Hilly or flat but you’ll want to look near or under specific trees. Those trees are dead or dying elms, poplar, oak, ash or old abandoned apple trees or scrub apples. Don't waste your time around areas with high acidity in the soil, areas with softwood, conifers or pine trees.

Hunting morel mushrooms is like fishing. You may cover a lot of ground early until you find one, but when you do, it's time to slow down. You now search the area carefully because there will generally be more within 20 feet of where you're standing.

My official disclaimer!
Morel mushrooms have a distinctive appearance, but false morel mushrooms, which encompass multiple species, can fool the untrained eye. True morel mushrooms have a uniformly shaped cap that is attached to the stem, and a hollow interior. False morel mushrooms have a wavy or irregular cap that may hang free from the stem, and web-like or cottony fibers inside.

As I pass on my knowledge about foraging for morel mushrooms, It is very possible to cause yourself serious harm if not death from eating poisonous mushrooms. I have tried to provide the most accurate information on foraging tips that I can here.

Never eat a mushroom unless you are confident in its identification. You should consult multiple sources to make sure of what you are eating, and ideally, go to a foraging class where an expert will teach you how to ID any mushroom before you head out for the first time.

That being said- don't trust me- if you are ever in doubt- just throw it out.
