A new bill in the California Legislature would put an end to a California industry that predates the Gold Rush.
Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, submitted a bill that would prohibit the state from issuing fur trapping licenses.
Last year, the state issued 133 of them, which trappers used to capture 995 muskrats, 105 gray foxes, dozens of skunks and other mammals, according to the Natural Resources Agency. MORE

Source and Use of Firearms Involved in Crimes: Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016
Based on the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI), about 1 in 5 (21%) of all state and federal prisoners reported that they had possessed or carried a firearm when they committed the offense for which they were serving time in prison (figure 1). More than 1 in 8 (13%) of all prisoners had used a firearm by showing, pointing, or discharging it during the offense for which they were imprisoned. Less than 1 in 50 (less than 2%) of all prisoners had obtained a firearm from a retail source and possessed, carried, or used it during the offense for which they were imprisoned. An estimated 287,400 prisoners had possessed a firearm during their offense. Among these, more than half (56%) had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it of the street or from the underground market (43%). Most of the remainder (25%) had obtained it from a family member or friend, or as a gift. Seven percent had purchased it under their own name from a licensed
firearm dealer.

A team of Israeli scientists think they might have found the first complete cure for cancer
“We believe we will offer in a year’s time a complete cure for cancer,” said Dan Aridor, of a new treatment being developed by his company, Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi), which was founded in 2000 in the ITEK incubator in the Weizmann Science Park. AEBi developed the SoAP platform, which provides functional leads to very difficult targets.
“Our cancer cure will be effective from day one, will last a duration of a few weeks and will have no or minimal side-effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market,” Aridor said. “Our solution will be both generic and personal.”

It'll be a cold snap for the ages — the Ice Ages!
By the end of Wednesday, 85 percent of U.S. land area and 230 million Americans will experience temperatures of 32 degrees or colder, thanks to this extended polar vortex.
And 25 percent of America will get down to 0 degrees, in dangerous cold that'll touch 75 million U.S. residents.
"Historic cold, unprecedented cold, these are all adjectives you could use to describe this," said NBC meteorologist Kathryn Prociv said.

There Coming
Robots aren’t replacing everyone, but a quarter of U.S. jobs will be severely disrupted as artificial intelligence accelerates the automation of existing work, according to a new Brookings Institution report.
The report, published Thursday, says roughly 36 million Americans hold jobs with “high exposure” to automation — meaning at least 70 percent of their tasks could soon be performed by machines using current technology. Among those most likely to be affected are cooks, waiters and others in food services; short-haul truck drivers; and clerical office workers.

The Drivers Wanted Market is Heating Up
Walmart, America’s largest private employer, plans to hire hundreds more truck drivers in 2019 while boosting the pay of its current drivers.
Walmart added 1,400 truck drivers to its 2.3 million-strong workforce in 2018, joining the hiring boom that added over 2.6 million jobs to the economy that year.
Starting February, the company will also increase its drivers’ per-mile rates and other pay, hiking the average salary to $87,500, Walmart stated
 in a Jan. 23 release.

Possible U.S. Backed Coup Underway in Venezuela
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on Wednesday, winning the backing of Washington and many Latin American nations and prompting socialist Nicolas Maduro, who has led the oil-rich nation since 2013, to break relations with the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump formally recognized Guaido shortly after his announcement and praised his plan to hold elections. That was swiftly followed by similar statements from Canada and a slew of right-leaning Latin American governments, including Venezuela’s neighbors Brazil and Colombia. Via:

Remember, the Democrat talking point on firearms
It’s funny that these same gun grabbers never push laws to increase the penalties on the people who use firearms in commission of a crime

Legislation submitted in the Democrat-controlled Oregon legislature would fundamentally change the state’s firearm laws, recasting them as the most restrictive in the country.
State Sen. Rob Wagner has submitted SB 501 for the upcoming session. Wagner’s bill would require licensing for gun owners prior to purchase, outlaw firearm magazines capable of holding more than five rounds and limit individual ammunition sales to no more than 20 rounds every 30 days

China Offers a Path to Eliminate U.S. Trade Imbalance, Sources Say
China has offered to go on a six-year buying spree to ramp up imports from the U.S., in a move that would reconfigure the relationship between the world’s two largest economies, according to officials familiar with the negotiations. By increasing goods imports from the U.S. by a combined value of more than $1 trillion over that period, China would seek to reduce its trade surplus -- which last year stood at $323 billion -- to zero by 2024, one of the people said. The officials asked not to be named as the discussions aren’t public.Bloomberg News

Let The Good Times Roll
The Patriots are headed to their third straight Super Bowl, thanks to Tom Brady's ability to come through in the clutch…..More

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Robert Kraft buying the Patriots.
At the time, Kraft paid a then-NFL record $175 million to purchase the team and keep it in the Boston area. It was a bold move for Kraft, considering the team had been struggling during the previous decade and was playing in an antiquated stadium.
Kraft, a 23-year season ticket-holder before buying the team, not only prevented the team from going to St. Louis, but has been the steward of a team that’s won 18 division titles, nine conference crowns and five Super Bowl championships.
During Kraft’s 25 seasons, the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs 20 times, which is more than double what the franchise had accomplished in its first 34 seasons.
To mark the anniversary, we reached out to some people in the NFL and Patriots community to get their thoughts on the occasion.

Fake News Buzzfeed---Mueller Statement Disputes Report That Trump Directed Cohen to Lie
The special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election disputed on Friday a report that said President Trump had directed Michael D. Cohen, his longtime lawyer and fixer, to lie to Congress about his role in negotiations to build a skyscraper in Moscow.
The rare public statement by a spokesman for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, challenged the facts of an article published by BuzzFeed News on Thursday saying that Mr. Cohen had told prosecutors about being pressured by the president before his congressional testimony.

The Washington Post has described it as “the highest-profile misstep yet for a news organization during a period of heightened and intense scrutiny of the press, as the special counsel’s office issued a thorough rebuke of the website’s story published Thursday.

Remember, if it is clear tonight you may witness the “Super Blood Wolf Moon” total lunar eclipse. The first full moon of the month will occur on Sunday night. Early Native American tribes gave this moon the name Wolf Moon, in reference to the howling winter wolf packs.
The moon will undergo a full lunar eclipse. This eclipse occurs when the orbit of the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. This alignment causes the shadow of our planet to be cast upon the moon giving it a distinctly red hue.
The common name for the moon during this full lunar eclipse is the Blood Moon. This will be the last total lunar eclipse until 2021. It is an amazing set of lunar events that will come together to create an amazing sight in the night sky. The total eclipse will last for about an hour and is expected to start at 11:42 p.m. ET and end at 12:44 a.m. ET.
